Vital win for town

Spalding Town’s bowlers helped them to a seven wicket win at Grantham in the Lincs Premier on a day when all four of the bottom sides picked up maximum points wins.

Town remain seven points above the bottom two thanks to the win over fifth-from-bottom Grantham.

Spalding skipper Ollie Dring’s decision to field first was vindicated with overseas star Walter Kinlock taking 4-30.

He nabbed three of the top four batters as second change bowler after Nilantha Appattu (1-38) enjoyed an early breakthrough.

Grantham were 56/1 when Kinlock came on but were bowled out for 118, including losing the last six wickets for the addition of 22 runs.

Josh White picked up a miserly 2-11 from six overs, Mustafa Mughal 2-7 and Josh Lawrence 1-8.

It led to a comfortable enough win with Jon Manton (33) and Divyeash Vaseeharan (30) putting on 81 for the first wicket.

Dring (13) and Lawrence (13 not out) saw Spalding to a seven-wicket win.

Town host Woodhall Spa, the side just below them in the table, this Saturday.

  • Spalding’s 2nd XI lost by seven wickets at home to Newborough 2nd in Division Two South.

After being put in, Phil Lewis (44) and Richard Riley (38) made a steady start with a 90-run opening partnership.

Dan Mulley (22) and Will Clark (24) added 37 before they too both fell in quick succession leaving Spalding 139/4.

Attempts to up the scoring by the tail proved difficult and no-one else reached double figures as Town ended the five overs on 163/9.

In the reply, two wickets in three balls from Thomas Decamps (2-22) had Newborough 20/2, but opener and skipper Chester Hercock’s (73 not out) backed by a 39-ball 43 from Matt Cawley saw Newborough to within sight of the finish with plenty of overs in hand before Will Olley (20 not out) helped see his side to a seven-wicket win with 16 overs to spare.
