An appeal to raise funds to help Spalding United’s 2024/25 season captain Glenn Walker recover from an injury has so far raised more than £2,500.
The Go Fund Me appeal was set up by former Tulips manager Elliot Sandy to help Walker get back on his feet as quickly as possible and he said: “I am reaching out to the football community to raise funds for my good friend Glenn. I am hoping friends and fans can work together to help his young family while he is unable to work.”
The 37-year-old utility player suffered a severe leg injury – a hyper-extension of his left knee – resulting in complex tears in his meniscus (cartilage inside the knee joint).
Sandy said: “The damage is significant enough that he requires surgery to repair it. With the NHS waiting time being so long, going private and as soon as possible would be ideal.”
Several of Walker’s current and former team-mates have pledged their support and Sandy said: “This injury has had a major impact on Glenn’s ability to work, move and live life as he normally would. Recovery will take time, and with rehabilitation costs, time off from work, and a young family to support, there is sure to be a financial strain.”
Walker is booked in for the operation on June 18 at Woodland Hospital in Kettering and said: “Thanks to everyone that’s donated so far, it’s much appreciated.”
