Taylor-Vassall claims ladies’ club championship crown at Tydd St Giles Golf Club

Maria Taylor-Vassall has been crowned as club champion in Tydd St Giles Golf Club’s ladies’ section.

Tydd held their ladies’ gross and net championship over two successive August weekends, the competition amongst team-mates fierce as always.

The first round net was a closely contested competition, with Taylor-Vassall and Petra Meir leading the way with a score of net 68 each.

Christine Burton and Ann Hobson followed closely on their heels with a net 69 and 71 respectively.

After round two Taylor-Vassall was victorious with a net 71, make her total score of net 139 that was good enough to take overall glory.

Hobson came second with an impressive net 73 for a total of 144, while close behind them were Burton and Meir with total net scores of 145.

Meanwhile, last year’s gross champion Lorraine Gallie defended her title, winning with a first round gross 89 and a second round gross of 85 for a total of 174.

That was good enough for her to fend off Taylor-Vassall by three shots.

  • The Tydd St Giles seniors’ section put on the Bob Johns Classic annual charity event last week, an event named after a very popular member of the club.

The competition was a four-ball team Stableford event, with the charity supported on the day being Cancer Research UK. They will receive a cheque for £593.

Tydd’s family charity co-ordinator John Leake said: “I thank all for taking part and their generosity.”

Competition results: Overall – 1st Tim Martin, Bob Ellis, John Forbes and Jim Hennighan 132pts; 2nd Ken Doughty, Ron Colledge, Alex Harding and Joe Clines 129pts (ocb).

Men’s section: August Stableford Pairs competition – 1st Tim Hipkin & Terry Alcock 46pts; 2nd Mark Boughen & Keith Crowson 43pts; 3rd Josh Ward & Phil Wilkinson 42pts (ocb); 4th Vinny Day & Mike Barton 42pts.
