Super Seb shines with fantastic 51 break on opening night of season

A 51 break from Seb Grimston was the highlight of the opening night of fixtures in the new Spalding and District Snooker League season on Thursday.

Grimston, who plays off an O21 handicap, made the terrific tally for Consti H in a 5-1 Division Two victory over Crowland C.

Also starting the second tier season well were Pyramid B, who shrugged off last season’s relegation from the top flight to see off Services C 5-1 in Spalding.

Jason Green (O56), Alfonso Palumbo (O42) and Dave Pearson (O7) made breaks of 31, 25 and 28 respectively to fire the Bourne boys to glory.

Three other Division Two teams raced to 5-1 wins on day one, too.

Holbeach C saw off Holbeach B in an all-club affair with Mark Gregory (O14) pocketing a 23 break, while Pyramid C breezed past Crowland B and Consti I dispatched Gosberton B.

Up in Division One, champions Tulips B were humbled 4-2 at Holbeach A.

Jem Merrison (O35) made a 35 break for the hosts, while Mark Wilkinson (O21) hit back with a 32 break for Tulips.

There were some fine individual showings in Donington A’s 4-2 victory over Consti F, led by Sam Major (O28).

He made breaks of 36 and 24, while also finishing with a 25 clearance. Tony Scully (O14) added a cool 31.

More solid breaks followed in Long Sutton B’s 4-2 success over friendly foes Long Sutton A.

Stuart Atkin (O42) made a 32 break in the final frame for the A team, but his victory wasn’t enough to deny the B boys. Mat Smith (O42) added a 27 break for Sutton A, while Steve Godfrey (O28) replied with 26 and 25 for the winners.

Another player to shine on day one was Matt Turner (scr), who made 33 as Donington C prevailed 4-2 at Consti B.

Promoted Bourne Snooker Centre A are up and running after a 4-2 home success over Boundary B. Oliver Player (O28) settled the contest in the final frame, while Mark Gray (O105) top scored with a 28 break.

Meanwhile, Spalding side Services A picked up a handy 5-1 triumph at Pyramid A as Pete Mullane (O21) and Jon Bettinson (scr) trousered breaks of 21 and 20 respectively.

Down in Division Three, Oliver Turner was the star man with a fine 46 break for Services F. The O21 handicapper made the super score en-route to a frame victory in a 4-2 win over Whittlesey C.

Consti E will consider themselves fortunate to have seen off Pyramid E 5-1 after three of the five frames went to the final black.

In a tight tussle, the vital victories from Stuart Gravil (O14) and Lindsay Porter (R7) proved key.

Also narrowly victorious were Gosberton A, who saw off hosts Consti D 4-2.

Carl Wand (scr) settled this one with a 73-39 final frame success.

Elsewhere, both Donington B and Consti C picked up four-point hauls, beating Consti A and Bourne SC B respectively.
