Shack up with new Men’s Shed

A new Men’s Shed group has been set up in a bid to alleviate loneliness.

The PE11 Men’s Shed aims to service the Spalding area by getting men together and potentially doing projects and putting on events.

They’re currently meeting at each other’s homes, but hope to find a permanent base.

Recent sessions include cider making.

Club secretary Doug Coleman said: “This is far from just DIY, so members are encouraged to enjoy, share and participate in other pastimes.

“Members are currently building classic fairground games of skill and luck.”

Men’s Sheds were set up as a male version of Women’s Institutes and there’s a hugely successful one based at Long Sutton.

Those behind the Spalding based one wanted to bring the movement to the town and surrounding area.

A spokesman said: “Men’s Sheds are spaces where men can meet like-minded men who enjoy a social atmosphere, and where you can grab a cuppa and ‘have a laugh’.

“The benefits that sheds offer are far reaching. They can improve men’s health and wellbeing, help the environment, and contribute to strengthening local communities.

“Members are offered the opportunity to learn new skills, as well as share and pass on any knowledge or expertise they have accumulated over their lifetime.

“These could be practical (woodworking, car repairs, gardening etc.), recreational activities (board games, arts & crafts etc..), or helping others to become more confident in today’s digital world. Some members bring along their own projects, while others take part in group or community projects.

“Not into DIY? Guests are sometimes invited to speak at Shed meetings. These could be blue light services, local historians or even ‘after dinner speakers’.”
