Sewage spill in town waterway

A failing pump saw sewage flood into a residential waterway in Long Sutton.

The Anglian Water-owned equipment failed, leaving the foul water in a drain that flows through the town near Church Green and Lancaster Drive.
The company used tankers to pump the wastewater from the impacted ditch to protect the environment.
Parish council chairman John Clarey said that sewage had built up ‘quite badly’ at the weekend and there had been complaints about a smell.
“The main issue was that water was spilling from the drain into the dyke and we know children sometimes play there,” he said. “That would have been dangerous.”
Anglian Water staff were seen working on the waterway in the town throughout the week.
“This issue was caused by a pumping failure, not a storm overflow being activated,” a spokesman said. “We tankered the area to reduce the environmental impact of this event, and to make sure customers in the surrounding area could still use their toilets and taps as normal,” said a spokesman.
The team from the water company worked with the Environment Agency to complete sampling at the site, on the Church Green and Lancaster Drive watercourse.
“All tankering has now finished, and the Environment Agency is satisfied that the environmental impact of this event is limited,” added the spokesman.
