Second round of copper cable theft

A second theft of internet cable has hindered attempts to get homes without internet or landlines back online.

As reported previously 2,500 homes were affected by the initial theft of 2km of cable in Moulton Chapel on January 19.

But last week thieves struck for a second time, Openreach confirmed, though neither they nor Lincolnshire Police would confirm where the theft took place. It’s also not clear how much cable was stolen in the second theft.

District councillor Anthony Casson said some residents had been told they could expect to be offline for a month.

An Openreach spokesperson said: “Our engineers are working as quickly and safely as possible to reconnect the remaining properties following criminal damage to our phone and broadband network in the Moulton Chapel area.

“The bulk of the work to replace the damaged cables is complete and we’re doing our best to get everything back to normal this week.

“This is a complex and time-consuming job with more than 2km of cables having to be replaced and repaired.

“A road closure is in place so our teams can work safely and without delays. We’re making sure residents can access their homes at all times – we know it’s inconvenient, and we would avoid it if there were any other safe option.

“We’re grateful for everyone’s patience and understanding while we continue with this important work.”
