Saturday football: Tigers edged out on opening day, Pinchbeck hit for six and Crowland impress on return

Both Holbeach United and Pinchbeck United made losing starts to the new Uhlsport UCL Premier Division season on Saturday.

The Tigers took an early lead at Anstey Nomads before suffering a 2-1 reverse, while the Knights were walloped 6-0 at home by Rugby Town.

Starting with Holbeach, Phil Barnes couldn’t have wished for a better start to his first league game as boss as Spencer Tinkler nodded them into a fourth-minute lead.

But Cole Wildin levelled eight minutes later with an impressive volley, before Michael Reeve netted the winner soon after.

Holbeach will be hoping for better when they host Deeping on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

Pinchbeck meanwhile, had a nightmare opening day and found themselves 5-0 down at the break.

Doubles from Liam Francis (3 & 23), Dylan Parker (7 & 70) and Danico Johnson (35 & 38) handed the managerless Knights a home humbling.

They now visit Sleaford Town, who lost 8-0 at Shepshed Dynamo, on Wednesday (7.45pm).

Meanwhile, Crowland Town announced their return to the ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division with a big 3-0 win over Oakham United.

Holbeach United Reserves drew 1-1 with Peterborough North End Sports at Carter’s Park, while Long Sutton went down 1-0 at Stilton United.

More to follow.
