Pete’s mutton chops for Oliver! production are Sikes for sore eyes

There is reasoning behind the bushy sideburns currently being sported by Spalding pub landlord Pete Williams.

He’s playing Bill Sikes in Spalding Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society’s production of Oliver!, which begins a four-night run at the South Holland Centre on Wednesday.(May 18)

Few people might know that Punchbowl owner and South Holland district councillor Pete went to drama school and has the Oliver! musical on his CV.

“When I was 12 I was in the West End production with Barry Humphries as Fagin and [musicals producer] Cameron Mackintosh as the assistant stage manager,” he said.
“Oliver! has a really special place in my heart – it takes me back to my childhood. It’s great to be involved with SADOS doing it again now.”

Landing the role of Sikes came as a welcome bolt out of the blue for Pete. A pub customer happened to mention SADOS’s next production the night before the auditions.

And what future for those mutton chops of his?
“They’re coming off after the final show!” said Pete.
