Nicholson edges out young gun Louie to nab Rabbits Open Day title at Spalding Golf Club

Some 75 players contested Spalding Golf Club’s Rabbits Open Day on Sunday.

The top three were very close at the Surfleet course, but it was 18-handicapper Lee Nicholson who took the title on 44 points.

Promising youngster Louie Gooderson (25 handicap) was second on 43 points, while Paul Darley (28) was third on 41 points.

  • Seniors’ section skipper John Camm hailed this year’s away day event at Stanton on the Wold as a big hit.

Geoff Dewhurst (43 points) was the individual winner on the day, with Jim Dobson (40 points) and John Brett (40 points) completing the top three.

Peter Bridge, Brett and Brendan D’Abreo (37.33 points) were the team winners, with Monty Brittain, Neil West and Jim Dobson (37 points) second and Chris Smith,

Stewart Sharp and Rick Edwards (36.33 points) third. Nearest the pin on fifth was Monty Brittain, while Rick Edwards took the prize on the 15th.

Andy Rafferty, Albert Jacobs and David Brotherton won the 2s competition.

Camm said: “It was an enjoyable captain’s away day. Stanton on the Wold is a venue I would recommend to be used in future away and exchange days.”

  • Spalding’s seniors drew 4-4 with their counterparts from King’s Lynn at the Surfleet course on Thursday.

It was a hard-fought affair, with all matches tight and enjoyable.

Results: Peter Bridge and John Keeton lost 2&1, Sid Chapman and Ron Sudbury won 4&3, Dennis Farnsworth and Paul Bruce lost 4&2, Mike Browning and Jim Dobson won 2&1, Howard Greaves and Alan Pritchard won 2&1, Peter Gooderson and Bernard Herbert lost 1 down, Rod Filby and Robert Samson lost 1 down, Monty Brittain and Peter Julian won 1up.

  • Ladies’ section: The August Medal was played in pleasant conditions and, despite some tricky hole placements on the greens, many ladies scored well at the Surfleet course. That moved the competition standard scratch to 73.

Result: 1st Jean Wilkinson 71 (nett); 2nd Chris Leggett 71; 3rd Angela Roper 72.

League match: Spalding 3 Burghley Park 1 (Lois Williamson and Matilde Kedzlie won 5&4, Tilly Garfoot and Elaine Hancock won 5&4, Dianne Rafferty and Angela Roper lost 1 down, and Eden Inglis and Maria Williamson won 3&2).

Friendly result: Toft 3 Spalding 1 (Beryl Clay and Carole Holland halved, Lizzie Cook and Sybil Thorpe lost 3&2, Sue Matthews and Jacquie Walton lost 3&2, and Jenny Wilson and Gill Dewhurst halved).

B team result: Burghley Park 2 Spalding 2 (Paula Brown and Anita Cross lost 6&5, Ruth Atkins and Sue Matthews won 2 up, Lizzie Cooke and Barbara Newcombe lost 2 down and Jenny Van Gemeren and Jackie Bailey Scott won 4&2).
