Maltby hits double as Pinchbeck United bounce back in fine style

W’Boro Whitworth 1
Pinchbeck United 5

Five-star Pinchbeck United eased past rock-bottom Wellingborough Whitworth 5-1 on Tuesday night to move within four points of fourth place in the Future Lions UCL Premier Division.

Having seen their lengthy unbeaten run ended by Deeping Rangers on Saturday, the Knights bounced back in typical style at London Road.

Skipper Andrew Tidswell smashed Ian Dunn’s side into a 14th-minute lead with a strike into the roof of the net, before Ollie Maltby doubled the lead with a routine finish three minutes later.

Malty grabbed his second of the night – and the 139th of his Pinchbeck career – when he headed home a rebound after new signing Alex Beck had rattled the bar.

It was 4-0 seven minutes into the second period when Harry Vince, on as a half-time substitute, smashed home his first goal for the Knights on his debut.

Maltby then saw a penalty saved to deny him a hat-trick, but Pinchbeck had their fifth goal soon after when Lee Beeson’s cross-come-shot picked out the corner on 55 minutes.

The hosts pulled one back in added time, but it failed to take the shine of a handsome win for the visitors.

Striker Beck, signed from Wisbech Town on Monday, made his debut in the victory – and Dunn feels that he’s now got a leading goalscorer on his hands.

The player/boss said: “At his best, Alex is a 40-goal a season striker in the UCL Premier Division.

“He’d not been playing regularly with Wisbech, so he decided that he wanted to drop back down. We spoke on Sunday and I’m delighted to have got him to come here.

“There’s no pressure on him. He’ll have time to settle in and I’m convinced that the goals will follow.”

Knights: Lovelace, West, Cartwright (Vince), Tidswell, Field, Wilson, Beeson (Adams), Shipley (Limb), Maltby, Beck, Edwards. Not used: Dunn.
