Hot weather not ideal for gardens but judging will go ahead

The long hot summer has continued this week with some truly scorching temperatures across the area.

Great news if you are on the first few days of the summer holidays and enjoying the glorious weather.

Not quite so great if you are a gardener and trying hard to keep your parched flowerbeds from baking solid or your hanging baskets from boiling.

Spare a thought for the Holbeach in Bloom stalwart and chairman Graham Rudkin who is spending several hours each day watering more than 300 containers and baskets around the town to ensure it all remains looking stunning.

With 260 hanging baskets alone, the watering is taking hours each day. But the results mean that weeks of effort in growing and planting this year’s displays have not been wasted.

The town has been judged for the annual In Bloom competition and everything is crossed for a gold when the results are published in September.

Entries for this year’s Front Garden Competition in the town have been muted because of the unusually hot weather.

But the judges will be out and about as promised and the entries will be judged, taking into consideration the dry weather and difficult growing conditions.

“It has been very difficult for gardeners and everything has involved a lot more work than usual because of the weather,” said Mr Rudkin.

“We really appreciate those who have taken the time and trouble to enter the competition, despite the weather,” he added.
