Residents have spoken of how a fire in an outbuilding spread along back fences in a Spalding street sending flames ’12 feet’ in the air
Fire crews were called to Pennygate at 12.11pm today (Wednesday, June 6).
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue say there was ‘severe fire damage to several sheds, outbuildings, fence panels and posts’ as a result of the blaze.
It issued a plea for Spalding residents to keep windows and doors closed as a result of the huge amount of smoke from the blaze.
There were five fire crews in attendance, four from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and two from Cambridgeshire.
One resident of the road, who did not wish to be named but who had been evacuated from his house, said he believed the fire had started in a garden shed but had then quickly spread due to fence panels.
“I was having my dinner and then heard everyone shouting to alert them about the fire,” he said. “The fire seems to have started in a garden shed, but the wind didn’t help as it blew the fire along the line of fences at the back of the house.
“The flames were huge, about 12 foot high.
“There was a thick black smoke so you couldn’t see over to the near neighbour.”
Kathryn Harrison-Degg, who lives nearby, said: “People where urged to evacuate the roadside and paths due to the smoke being toxic.
“Explosions could be heard down Hannam Boulevard and surrounding streets.
“The fire crews and police very quick to attend and corner off the effected area.”
A spokesman for Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said: “The fire was extinguished using 10 breathing apparatus, two main jets, four hose reel jets, two thermal imaging cameras, a roof ladder, and one short extension ladder.”
