Complaints fall at sewage works

Only one complaint about the smell from Spalding’s sewage works has been lodged so far this year.
A business neighbouring Anglian Water’s Water Recycling Centre in West Marsh Road made the complaint on July 7, according to a progress report due to be presented to Lincolnshire County Council’s Environmental Scrutiny Committee tomorrow.
The report by Paul Dimbleby, Lincolnshire Tactical Support Manager at Anglian Water, suggests measures put in place to combat smells from the centre are now having effect, resulting in fewer complaints.
Previous problems of bad “rotten egg” smells had been blamed on the long sewer network in the Spalding area combined with a large number of pumping stations and factory trade effluent discharges resulting in septic sewage arriving at the Water Recycling Centre.
But Mr Dimbleby’s report said nitrate dosing systems, which had successfully used in other networks, was now in place at various pumping stations around Spalding and Anglian Water would continue to review the location and volumes of chemical used in light of its own odour monitoring and any customer complaints.
