Double defeat for Spalding Tennis Club sides despite battling effort

Spalding Tennis Club’s “A” and “C” teams both suffered losses last week.

In the Peterborough and District Tennis League, Spalding A were at home to Whittlesey, and once again suffered a 6-3 defeat on a miserable wet Monday night.

The team was represented by the doubles pairings of Martin Perkins and David Dorey-Rodrigues, Jack Howard and Dominic Layton-Hannam, and John Farrow and Mike Sitch.

In the first round, things were looking promising for the pairing of Howard and Layton- Hannam. They raced into a 5-1 lead, but an injury to Layton-Hannam affected the remainder of the rubber, which was lost 7-6.

The most successful pairing was Perkins and Dorey-Rodrigues, winning two of the rubbers, 9-4 and 8-5.

Overall, four of the rubbers were played to a close margin of 7-6 – but unfortunately Spalding lost three of these and the team have now slipped into the bottom two.

Spalding’s C team, represented by Jamie Lowe and Carl Newall, Richard Ebbage and Ray Gamble and George Taylor and Colin Twigger, suffered a 6-3 home defeat to Castor B.

Despite the score, all pairs won one rubber.
