BOWLS: England call-up for Ayscoughfee captain Ashley Caress for European Championships

Talented Spalding bowls player Ashley Caress has been selected to represent England at the 2015 European Championships in Israel later this year.

Caress, who is captain of Ayscoughfee Bowls Club, received the call from Bowls England following a string of impressive performances at last year’s British Series in Ireland and at the National Championships at Royal Leamington Spa.
Two men and two women have been selected to travel to Israel in October, with Caress joined by Alex Walton (Cambridgeshire), Rebecca Field (Norfolk) and Amy Stanton (Worcestershire).

The four players will play singles, pairs and mixed fours and will be aiming to repeat the success of Jamie-Lea Winch, Wendy King, Jamie Walker and Robert Paxton, who lifted the team trophy for England in 2013.

The championships, a bi-annual event, will be played at the Ra’anana and Ramat Gan Bowling Clubs, located close to central Tel-Aviv.

This will be the highlight of Caress’s career so far – and one he is extremely excited for.
“I can’t wait to get out there and test my ability against top players from across Europe,” said the 23-year-old. “I’m confident in my ability and the ability of my teammates.
“If we can adjust to the surface out there I’m sure we have a great chance of retaining the team trophy.”

Before the Euros, Caress will join up with England in September to attempt to retain the British Series won in Ireland last year.
He is part of a 24-man team who will play Scotland, Ireland and Wales on home soil in Oxford next month.
