Band is looking for more recruits

Holbeach Town Band is on a mission to encourage former brass players to come back to playing.

Musicians who stopped playing due to work commitments, or they learned to play at school but didn’t continue afterwards, are welcome.

Whatever the reason, the band is holding ‘open’ practices from 6.30pm to 9.30pm on Wednesday, April 12 for the main band and the training band and 10am to noon on Saturday, April 15 for the starter and learner groups.

Sessions will be held at the band’s usual practice area in Back Lane in the town.

A wide range of instruments are available.

Holbeach Town Band musical director, Mel Hopkin, said: “The main band‘s membership has dropped by about a third since pre-pandemic.

“Some of this is due to leaving the area and/or work commitments.

“There are five talented young players who have gone away to university in recent years, and three more will be going in September.

“While the band’s learner groups are going well it takes time to reach the level required for the main band.

“The band has four playing groups – starters for absolute beginners; learners at grade one; training band at grade three; and the main band.

“So, there is something to suit all abilities.

“If you can play, or have played before, come to our Wednesday evening practices.

“If you would like to learn how to play, come along on a Saturday morning.”
