Plans for a ‘nationally significant’ solar farm capable of powering 215,000 homes have been submitted to the government for consideration.
The Meridian Solar Farm would occupy around 2,700 acres of land north of Crowland and east of Spalding.
The solar farm is classed as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project, meaning the decision will be placed in the hands of the Secretary of State for Energy, rather than the local council.
Downing Renewable Developments, which is behind the plans, says it will deliver cheaper and cleaner energy while benefiting the community.
However, campaigners against the project say it’s an “industrial-scale development” in the countryside which is being rushed through.
The government has confirmed it has received the application and will publish it on its planning website.
The solar farm would include a battery farm and connect to the National Grid through a substation being proposed as part of the 140km Grimsby to Walpole pylon line.
Campaign group Lincolnshire Against Needless Destruction said that solar farms like Meridian mustn’t lead to “poor planning” to reach Net Zero goals.
Campaign lead Cat Makinson said: “Meridian is not just another planning application. It is part of a much bigger picture of energy infrastructure being pushed through Lincolnshire at unprecedented speed.
“Residents deserve clarity, honesty and a fair process.
“We support the UK’s net zero commitments, but that does not mean accepting poor planning or unnecessary damage to our countryside.
“Lincolnshire should not be treated as an easy target for industrial-scale development.”
The project’s website says: “Our vision for Meridian Solar is to deliver cleaner, greener, and lower-cost energy, whilst delivering direct benefits to the local environment and community.”
It adds: “If approved, the scheme would make a significant contribution to energy security in the UK, providing energy for up to 215,000 homes.”
Public hearings on the Meridian Solar Farm are likely to be held later this year.
There are currently 12 NSIPs going through the planning process in Lincolnshire, with campaigners claiming the county’s being unfairly targeted by renewable energy companies.
