Milestone for new centre

A significant milestone has been reached in the redevelopment of Spalding’s Castle site.
The steel frame for the extended facility is now complete and the full internal structure can be seen.
The new building will include two new swimming pools, multi-sport hall, fitness suite, cycle and group exercise studios, health and wellbeing consultation rooms, a children’s play area and updated receptions and café-type facilities.
“This milestone showcases the fantastic work taking place on this important project, as you can begin to see the new building rise from the ground and these improved facilities become visible.
“It’s exciting that after so many months and years of planning and work that the community can now see the physical form of the facilities taking shape,” said Coun Gary Taylor, project sponsor for South Holland District Council.
Alongside the internal works and a 3G pitch, the first phase will see a new outdoor running and cycling circuit and community garden put in place.
Later phases include the demolition of the existing swimming pool building and the addition of a new multi-use games area, children’s play area, splashpad and additional car parking for the site.
The £28.3m project, which began full construction last September, is receiving £20m in UK government funding alongside further investment from the district council and almost £1m from the Premier League, the FA and Government’s Football Foundation to build a new 3G pitch on the site.
The new centre will be called the Castle Activity and Fitness Centre after a survey of residents.
