LETTERS – Proud to take part in ceremony

During my time as chairman of South Holland District Council, I had the privilege of meeting Jane Pearson, a passionate campaigner who worked tirelessly to bring Captain Matthew Flinders home to his birthplace of Donington.

That vision became a reality, and although I have since retired from politics, I now have the honour of serving as Communications and Recruitment Officer for the Spalding Royal Naval Association.

Sunday, July 13 marked the first anniversary of Captain Flinders’ interment at St Mary and the Holy Rood Church in Donington – the village where he was born. The commemorative service was deeply moving and took the form of traditional naval prayers, similar to those that would have been used aboard the very ships Flinders once sailed and to celebrate his achievements in mapping and naming Australia.

The Spalding RNA was privileged to be invited to attend. Under the Chairmanship of Shipmate Richard Brown, we were proud to take part in a ceremony that not only honoured the life and extraordinary achievements of Captain Flinders but also paid tribute to the continuing work of all seafarers, whether military, commercial, or within the leisure industry.

The service was very well supported by the local community, a reflection of the esteem in which Captain Flinders is held. During the ceremony, RNA members formed a guard of honour at the Flinders memorial, where wreaths and flowers were respectfully laid.

Following the service, we were warmly invited into the church hall for tea, cake, and the chance to reconnect with friends old and new. There was a real sense of community spirit, made all the more special knowing that the service was being streamed live to Australia, allowing people across the world to join us in remembrance and celebration.

On behalf of our chairman, Shipmate Richard Brown, I would like to extend sincere thanks to the people of Donington for their organisation and hospitality. Your efforts ensured a fitting tribute to one of Britain’s greatest navigators. Well done to all involved.
