Winning record goes but Grant grabs goal to save a point

City of Peterborough III 3 Spalding Men 1s 3
One more point should be enough to secure the Men’s East League Division Two North West for Spalding.
Celebrations were put on ice though as the focus switched to preserving their unbeaten record as they fell three goals adrift.
However, a stunning comeback saw them grab a point, although it came at the expense of their 17-match winning run.
After a goalless first half, Peterborough restarted strongly and were rewarded with two quick-fire goals. Spalding continued to press but a turnover on the top of the D saw the hosts go into a 3-0 lead with 18 minutes left.
A relentless last quarter saw Spalding produce a stunning comeback. Two penalty corners by Stu Cunnington brought the game back to 3-2 and, after both teams received green cards as tempers spiralled, a stunning 50-yard run from Will Wright saw him slide the ball through for James Grant to make it 3-3.

Glenn Richardson quickly levelled and Pete Wright’s first goal of the season put Spalding ahead.
However Spalding were unable to push on and Peterborough levelled from short range before the break and a similar effort in the second half earned them the spoils.

Spalding delivered a highly competitive performance but were narrowly beaten.
Alex Myland and John Clark scored in an even first half, however, the visitors got the only goal of the second half to earn victory.
Spalding remained competitive throughout, working hard across the pitch. Samuel Willerton’s outstanding midfield play earned him the player of the match award, while Elliot Ashton caused constant problems for the visitors.
