Weston looks set to lose its only pub and a farm shop

A village pub is set to close its doors two years after it was bought by a local company in a bid to save it from closure.

The Chequers is the only pub in Weston and the village will be left with just a shop.

Wimberley Hall Farm Shop in the village is also closing this weekend.

“We have a church with no full-time vicar, a pub and the village shop and we had a farm shop, so if the pub closes that will be a real shame,” said Chris Dicks, vice chairman of the parish council.

The pub was bought in 2014 by Robert Oldershaw and business parter John Grimwood, both of the Oldershaw Group.

Mr Grimwood declined to comment on the closure when contacted this week.

There has been a pub on the site for around 150 years and villagers will now be faced with travelling to neighbouring Moulton to visit their nearest pub.

“There is talk of building another 300 homes in the village with the new local plan, but we are losing facilities and the infrastructure needs looking at properly,” said Mr Dicks.

The farm shop, which opened in 2013 and butchery will close on Sunday and the coffee shop on Saturday.
