Due to a late change in programme, the first Spalding Gentlemen’s Society lecture this year will be given by Dr Bryn Hammond, Principal Curator of Collections at the Imperial War Museum and a fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
First World War historians still know little about the armies of their allies – especially the French.
However, in a modern internet-connected world, archive and museum digitisation projects in Britain, France and the United States gained fresh impetus during the First World War Centenary while, during the COVID-19 global pandemic, many of these online resources were made more freely available.
As a result, internet-based research projects are becoming increasingly viable and trans-national in nature.
Dr Hammond will speak about how these developments revived his interest in the Great War.
He’ll explain the role of social media in developing an important friendship and about a remarkable Australian lady he never met.
Practical advice on the tools available to help research will be mixed with stories about writers, teachers, interpreters, Winston Churchill’s artist friend, courage and surrealism.
The lecture will commence at 7.30pm at Broad Street Methodist Church, Spalding with an admission fee of £5 per person at the door (there’s no charge for students).
