Village pupils’ travel issues

A parent from Donington has raised how difficult it is for her son to get to sixth form in Bourne due to a lack of busses through the village.

The local secondary school, Cowley Academy, does not have a sixth form.
It is a member of the South Lincolnshire Academies Trust with pupils from both there and Spalding offered sixth form places in Bourne.
Free bus travel is offered, but only from as far as Spalding.
No public buses from Donington currently get to Pinchbeck or Spalding in time for the onward journey to Bourne.
“The children of Donington have been let down,” said parent Hazel Cunningham, who says her son has to walk or cycle to Billingborough. “Yet again the village gets forgotten.
“This affects a number of young people in the village.
“How are they meant to get sixth form if they don’t drive?”
Lucy Conley, chief executive officer at South Lincolnshire Academies Trust, said it offers free Delaine bus passes from Spalding, worth up to £760, for students at Cowley Academy and Spalding Academy, which, it says, it does not have to do, but chooses to.
The trust also says it relies on the Delaine bus service and produced a bus transport brochure available on its website to help current and potential future pupils.
“It has always been the trust’s priority to provide a high-quality education to all our students, with our four schools being spread across a wide area of Lincolnshire,” Mrs Conley said.
“Being in a rural area with students from a wide geographical catchment, many families have to make additional arrangements to ensure that students can attend the school. We recognise that some families may live in areas that are not as well serviced by public transport as others.
“We know that the Bourne Academy Sixth Form is a popular choice due to the wide range of subjects available, pastoral support and our excellent academic success.
“However, this is just one of many Sixth Form provisions in Lincolnshire that is available for students, we offer this as one option to young people in a myriad of possibilities.
“Although a student attends one of our four schools, it does not mean that we can provide transport for all students from all locations in Lincolnshire, as the geographical area is far too wide.
“To enable students to get to the Sixth Form in Bourne, we clearly state on the Sixth Form website and in our Sixth Form prospectus that bus routes to Bourne use Delaine Buses, and have always been clear that the free transport for Cowley Academy is ‘from Spalding’. “
