Upgrade work to increase Sutton Bridge power plant output ‘to start next year’

Work to upgrade Sutton Bridge power plant is expected to start next year.

The upgrade is intended to increase the energy output of the 800MW natural gas-fired, combined-cycle facility by 3.4 per cent, as well as lowering its start-up times and operating costs.

General Electric will be responsible for upgrading two existing gas turbines and a steam turbine at the plant.
The work is likely to start in mid-2016 and take several months to complete.

Kevin McCullough, chief executive officer of plant owner Calon Energy, said: “Along with other combined-cycle gas turbine plants in the UK, Sutton Bridge has competed with subsidised renewables, cheap coal and high gas prices.”

General Electric has been responsible for the operation and maintenance of the power station under a multi-year services agreement from 2013.
