Unstoppable Harriers roar to huge Eastern Young Athletes League win at Luton

Nene Valley Harriers made light work of their opposition as they stormed to victory in their Eastern Young Athletes League fixture at Luton by an impressive margin.

The Harriers’ haul of 720 points was almost 100 more than runners up Chelmsford AC, in a match contested by seven athletics clubs from across the eastern counties.

Nene Valley dominated the middle distance events with Megan Ellison and Josephine Fortune comfortably winning the under-17 A and B 1,500m races, while Amber Park and Ella Robinson pulled off an 800m double in the under-15 age group.

Flo Brill and Elisha Foord equalled this achievement at under-13 level in the 1,500m.

Joe Prince also won the boys’ under-15 800m, receiving excellent support from B race winner Billy Fitzpatrick.

Meanwhile, Sam Oakley had the measure of the opposition in the under-13 1,500m, winning in a speedy 4.51.6mins. Team mate Kai Chilvers was first over the line in the B string event, too.

Oakley’s older brother Oliver also took maximum points in the under-17 B 1,500m race.

The girls’ team recorded plenty of fine wins, with Alicja Gawronski cruising to victory in the under-13 B 200m and middle distance ace Brill added to her track success by throwing furthest in the B discus.

At under-15 level, Ella Robinson added the B 300m to her list of victories. Holly Yeeles threw furthest in the B shot too, with Jess Edwards claiming maximum points in the hammer throw.

Lydia Church was in top form for the under-17s with wins in the hammer and B discus.

At the same level, Priscilla Dadziea and Tierney Augustine were totally dominant in the shot, throwing 11.86m and 11.63m respectively.

Alex Pullen and Kelsi Ellis were also untouchable over 200m.

The boys were not to be outdone by their female counterparts – and in the under-13 age group Freddie Fraser pulled off a magnificent 100m and long jump double, as well as finishing runner up in the 75m hurdles.

George Harrison continued his fine season by taking maximum points with his discus throw of 21.27m.

Under-15 sprinters James Marsh and Marco Gilmore were in irresistible form, completely dominating both the A and B 100m and 200m races.

Jack Roffe had a day to remember, enjoying firsts at hammer, discus and shot.

Callum Robertson was a comfortable winner in the B shot and Tomi Ogunyoye pulled of a fine high jump victory.

Nene Valley’s under-17 boys had a superb day. William Hughes flew to victory over 200m with an eye-catching 22.4secs – the second fastest time recorded by the highly rated youngster. Abraham Jones won the B 200m too.

Michel Fleming leaped highest in the high jump, while Kai Harrison and Charles Hughes took the honours in the B shot and discus.

Hughes went one better when winning the javelin with a throw of 36.26m. Tom Lavender won the B throw and was within a metre of Hughes’ distance.

Team manager Russ Prosser was in ebullient form after the meeting, and was quick to lavish praise on his Harriers.

He said: “It was a great day with top class performances from so many athletes. We had our fair share of winners, but the whole squad performed well.

“In addition to the winners we were indebted to the likes of Millie Weller, Josie Downer and the other unsung stars who scored well in multiple events.”

Nene Valley now lie third behind Ipswich Harriers and Bedford and County in the 28-team league.
