Tydd St Mary march past rivals Spalding Town to keep unbeaten run going

Tydd St Mary’s unbeaten start to the ChromaSport PDFL Division Two season was extended to five games on Saturday as they picked up a fine 2-0 derby victory at Spalding Town to go second.

In what was a very close game between two old rivals, Tydd thought they’d broken the deadlock on seven minutes when sub Marcus Gilbertson was denied by an offside flag.

The Saints did take the lead on 17 minutes when a fierce 25-yard free kick from Paul Newcombe deflected into the net off Tom Coote’s ankle – giving Brendan Taylor no chance.

Tydd doubled their lead in impressive fashion with just ten minutes remaining when Max Burrell picked the ball up in the centre and slotted a lovely pass through to Ryan Jones on the right wing. His pin-point cross found Tim Lowe at the far post – and he slammed home with his left foot to make it 2-0.

Tydd manager Carl Wilson said: “This was not a pretty game to watch by any means. We saw two good sides going at each other in a local derby with neither really conceding much.

“We edged it on the day and I’m proud of the lads’ start to the season. We now go to Crowland next week looking to extend our unbeaten start.”
