Two wins in a week for Spalding

Spalding picked up two wins in a week in Division One of the Hertfordshire Water Polo Men’s League really began.

They saw off Hatfield 13-8 before then edging a close game against Bedford 12-11 to move back into mid-table in the league.

The Hatfield game on July 16 was evenly matched for the first three quarters.

Spalding led 2-1 after the first quarter courtesy of goals from Damian Makwana and Ed Martin.

The lead was 5-4 after the second quarter with a John James double and Makwana. Spalding adding to their total.

Hatfield came back in the third quarter, winning it by two despite another James double to take an 8-7 lead into the finale.

Spalding flourished in the final quarter, scoring six goals to the visitors’ one and making the scoreline look fairly comfortable.

There was three apiece from Gareth Lord and Makwana for a 13-8 win.

At the other end, goalkeeper Jon Davis had an excellent final quarter, denying Hatfield the chance to improve on their eight goals.

After scoring four goals in the game, James was named the man of the match.

The Hatfield win was followed up on Saturday by Spalding’s visit to Bedford and they came away with a fantastic 12-11 win.

Four goals from Gareth Lord, three from Ben Marsters, two from both Harry Bumfrey and Nathan Henfrey and one from Ed Martin sealed the win.
