Trio enjoy victories as Welland Yacht Club make a return to the water

There were three different winners across two series as Welland Yacht Club returned to racing action on Sunday.

The first race of the day was the Sunday Points Series opener, which attracted six boats to the starting line – four lasers, one laser radial and one laser 2.

The course was set to go upriver from the start, with Alan Cox taking the early lead from new member Ben Parsons, followed by Mark Holland, new member Richard Holland (laser 2), Richard Stedman (radial) and Alistair Mitchell.

The wind picked up slightly but in doing so kept shifting direction.

Richard Holland retired from the race later on, then throughout the second lap Mitchell and Cox traded first and second places a few times until Cox finally crossed the line three seconds ahead of Mitchell at the end, with Mark Holland third.

Next up was race one of the Afternoon Points Series, with Stedman now action as crew for Richard Holland in the laser 2.

Again, Cox got the early lead, this time from Mark Holland, closely followed by Mitchell then Parsons and Richard Holland/Stedman.

Cox again rounded buoy two first, but then took a capsize allowing Mitchell to take the lead into the second lap.

Then during the run back to buoy two, Cox went over again allowing Holland into second place.

The order would remain the same throughout the third lap, with Mitchell winning from Mark Holland, with Cox third.

The day ended with round two of Afternoon Points Series, as Mark Holland went one better than before and beat Mitchell to the win, with Cox third once again.

Cox had led early on, but would end up caught in the weed – allowing his rivals to pass and meaning Holland and Mitchell are tied in the series lead on three points.
