Council expects travellers to move on ‘within three days’

Travellers have set up camp on a piece of council-owned land in Spalding town centre for the second year running.

Seven caravans were on the land in King’s Road close to the Winfrey Avenue junction this morning (Monday).

A South Holland District Council spokesman said: “We can confirm that a number of travellers have set up camp on council owned land in King’s Road, Spalding. Our understanding is that the travellers intend to move on within three days.

“We have provided the travellers with bin bags which will be collected daily.  We will also be closely monitoring the situation and will take further action if appropriate.”

The Voice asked the travellers for comment but was told the community was French and no-one could speak English, though the lady we were speaking to did indicate they would stay ‘a couple of days.’

In April last year around 20 caravans parked up on the same piece of land for four days. Mess was left behind which was cleaned up by council staff.

At the time the council said the clean-up was done as part of normal service operations and did not represent an additional cost.
