Thousand flock to airfield open day

Miserable conditions didn’t stop a healthy crowd at Fenland Aero Club’s Wing and Wheels Open Day on Sunday, August 11.

Though it did stop many of the planes from taking to the air, more than a thousand visitors were able to wander around the 50 trade stands and marvel at the collection of vintage and classic motor cars, motor cycles and light aeroplanes.

Entertainment was provided by the Spalding Ukulele Band and together with the clubhouse restaurant doing a roaring trade, a variety of food stalls in the hangar and outside, catered for all.

A spokesman for the club, said: “The flying programme was curtailed by the strength of the wind, but there was a spirited display by a star of the forthcoming Batman movie, the Beech 18, G-BKGL, which had flown over from Leicester.

“A Vans 8, G-RVEI, also helped boost the air interest for the crowd.

“Sadly the whole event was brought to an abrupt halt at 2pm by a torrential downpour that sent the crowd running for cover and home but the earlier sunshine was sufficient to make the day a great success for the visitors and organisers.”
