Thorogood insists that Spalding United have a chance of beating in-form rivals Stamford in derby

Spalding United will look to take inspiration from Watford when they make the trip to Stamford on Saturday (3pm).

That’s according to interim boss Lewis Thorogood, who knows that his 16th-placed Tulips are massive underdogs for the game against the second-placed Daniels at the Zeeco Stadium.

But Thorogood cites Watford’s recent Premier League win over then unbeaten Liverpool as an example of what his side can achieve if they apply themselves correctly.

“It doesn’t get much harder than Stamford away,” said the Spalding supremo. “It’ll be a local derby in front of maybe 450 fans – and they are flying at the moment.

“We could just feel sorry for ourselves and go there with no hope, but anything is possible in football.

“Look at Watford beating Liverpool a few weeks ago, nobody would have predicted that, would they?

“The reality is that the game starts at 0-0. If we play in a positive manner and the mentality of the lads is right, we’ll give ourselves a chance.

“Our attitude has to be right, which it usually is, as Stamford are a very good side.”

Thorogood expects to have a similar squad available to the one that lost 3-0 to Chasetown on Tuesday night.

He does have a few seven-day approaches in, including one for Pinchbeck United’s young right-sider Jamie Gaukroger.
