Thorogood happy with Pinchbeck United showing despite loss against league leaders

Pinchbeck United are now in the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North drop zone after suffering a 4-0 home defeat against leaders Long Eaton United on Saturday.

They were soundly seen off by the unbeaten table-toppers at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, with Kameron Campbell (15), Marley Fearon (39), Sam Parker (89) and Ben Hutchinson (90) all on target.

With Selston defeating Holbeach United (see page 29), the Knights slip two points behind them in the table having played four games more.

Pinchbeck manager Lewis Thorogood was happy with what he saw from his side and felt the scoreline was harsh.

“I’ve got to say that 4-0 flattered them a little,” said the Knights chief. “Don’t get me wrong, they deserved to win.

“We were playing against a side who are very high on confidence and it showed.

“But, I thought our work-ethic and work-rate was brilliant against a side that are the best in the league right now.

“At 2-0 down at half time we didn’t crumble and came out with the right attitude.

“Our tempo was good and, do you know what, I just didn’t feel like they were going to score again.

“With 15 minutes to go we made a couple of subs and pushed on a bit, thinking that if we got a goal we might be able to pinch a point.

“But we made a mistake and that deflated us – and they killed us off.”

Knights: Wilkinson, Worthington, Robson, Spafford, Stevens, Williams, Sheriff, Moyses, Peasgood, Millar, Onyon. Subs used: Gagyi, Kacirek, Melson. Not used: Pipes-Goulsbra, Fixter.

Attendance: 75.
