The real job starts now for Holbeach United chief Jarvis

Much like the last two summers, it looks like being a busy close-season for Holbeach United.

The relatively new management team of boss Darren Jarvis and his assistant Tom Roberts will be looking to assemble a new-look squad for an assault at the UCL Premier Division title next time around.

Having taken over in the aftermath of Graham Drury and John Chand’s respective resignations, the pair did well to steer Holbeach to a fourth-placed finish.

Jarvis admits that he’ll be on the phone to transfer targets throughout the summer – and reckons he’s already got a number of commitments from potential new players.

“We came in at a really tough time,” said the Tigers chief. “I think, first and foremost, we wanted to settle the club and dressing room down to get everyone enjoying their football again.

“We’ve definitely achieved that. But we can’t wait for next season, there are no two ways about it.

“Robbo and I have had tremendous support all round from the club, players and committee. We know where we need to improve and have already identified players we want to target. We’ve already got some commitment from players.

“The big job starts now, but for me next season started when we took over really. We just can’t wait to get to pre-season with our players and our squad.

“The season is over, but the phone calls won’t stop, talking to players won’t stop. That’ll carry on – and I don’t mind that at all, it’s a part of the job I really enjoy.”

Since taking the reins at Carter’s Park, Jarvis’ Holbeach collected 15 points from 12 games, winning three and drawing six.

They were hampered by persistent selection headaches in the wake of something of a player exodus, forcing a number of reserve team players to step up. Jarvis knows what areas he needs to improve over the summer, but is happy to invite every player back for pre-season training.

Jarvis added: “We know what players in this squad that we want to retain.

“Everybody in the squad will get an opportunity to come to pre-season.

“They’ve proven through work-rate, commitment and ability that they deserve to be at this club. But we do know the areas that we want to improve. I would say that it’s about improving the squad, which will in turn improve the team. There’s nobody here that doesn’t work hard. They all have the right attitude, which is important as a manager at any level.

“We know where we need to improve – and we will. That’s already started.

“This club deserves to be inside the top four, so I’m pleased we’ve finished there. Next season, I’m sure we’ll be inside the top four again.”
