Terrific Holbeach United showing has co-boss Clifton happy as their ‘season starts now’

Holbeach United 4 Haverhill Borough 0

Delighted Danny Clifton declared that Holbeach United have finally arrived this season after Saturday’s superb 4-0 win over Haverhill Borough.

Two first-half strikes from Cal Davies and goals after the break from Joe Millinson and John Yambasu at Carter’s Park secured a third Thurlow Nunn League Division One North win of the season.

Joint boss Clifton was full of praise for his side, which was almost back to full strength, and admitted that the season starts now for his Tigers.

“Having an almost fully-fit squad made a massive difference,” admitted the joint chief. “We were at about 99 per cent and you could tell – it was a great result and an even better performance.

“I don’t want to get too carried away about it, but I think it feels like the season really starts now for us.

“We’ve got no more player holidays or reasons not to play, so we are back to the core group that we had during pre-season.

“This is the group we believe in and there was a really good vibe about the team on Saturday.

“I think having a few local lads in the squad – the likes of Will Barnes, Luke Nicholson, Harvey Wirkowski, Cal Davies, Kyle Compton and Fenn Storey – in the squad is massive. They know what it means to play for this club and it rubs off on the other lads.

“You could tell early on that Haverhill had some good players, but we began to nulify them well after the opening 15 minutes.

“I just knew we wouldn’t concede a goal, the lads wouldn’t allow it. They were putting their bodies on the line and defending in the way we’ve asked them to.

“Overall it was very encouraging and we can take lots of positives.”

Tigers: Rigby, Nicholson, H Henderson, Calvert, Johnson, Millinson, Barnes, Wirkowski, Yambasu, Davies, Compton. Subs used: Carter, F Henderson, Robertson, Storey. Not used: Blake.

Attendance: 112.
