There have been many letters and articles regarding speeding in whole of the South Holland District area and with much justification.
However, South Holland District Council are either reluctant or in fairness powerless to accommodate every person’s wishes.
One answer is, that like Weston Parish Council, they have approached both the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s office and the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership with a suggestion whereby a local parish council purchase a hand-held speed device, and, with the assistance of volunteers, can receive training in the use of the device and to recognise safe locations within 30 and 40mph speed areas.
This then empowers local volunteers to carry out speed checks within their own villages, whereby speeding vehicles have their speed recorded along with the registration number, time and date. Then they are sent to the local police who will check the registrations and write initially to the keeper of the vehicle with a warning.
Should the same vehicle be recorded at a later date then subsequent action can be taken by the police.
It is a proven fact that most drivers caught by the police speeding generally live within half a mile of their home address, so local village checks should have a major impact on speeding in those areas.
In order for this to work more parish councils need to approach the PCC & LRSP with this suggestion for their village.
The response from both parties has been encouraging and a decision should be known by the end of the year.”
