Table tennis round-up: More individual glory for Jean in Spalding and District League

The Spalding and District Table Tennis League held the first of its individual nights last week – with players competing for the supremes, ladies’ and doubles titles.

Just 18 members turned out, a little under half of those qualified, though some of that may be put down to the timing after Easter.

Some 17 of these entered the supremes, the overall championship, and four were seeded.

Number one seed Kelvin Preville was forced to withdraw in the second round from this singles event, although he managed to continue in the doubles.

The other three seeds took their rightful places in the semis, but only one match was completed.

This saw John Gilbert reach the final at the expense of Andrew Appleby. However, he was pushed to come from behind, with Appleby taking the first two ends 11-8, 11-7.

The next two went to deuce points with Gilbert hanging on 12-10 14-12 before taking the fifth end 11-8.

The other semi has Stephen Appleby facing Guntars Briedes.

In the doubles the seeds reached the final but had no time to play.

Gilbert and Jean White reached it at the expense of the Appleby brothers 11-8, 11-4, 12-10, while Preville and Briedes defeated Ionel Dumitrache and Adrian Dinvlescu 11-7, 11-7, 14-12.

All three ladies turned out for their competition, which was played as an all-play-all.

White defeated Hannah Gilbert 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 and Ping Wang 11-6, 11-6, 11-6, while Gilbert won against Wang 11-6, 11-8, 11-9. That saw White take the trophy, which was not contested last year, once again.

Earlier in the evening, Nets n Edges completed their league match with Moulton SE, Allan Lewis facing Moulton’s Applebys in the final two singles. They took both games in three to finish 5-0 winners and extend their lead in the Division One title race.
