Table tennis round up – Leading trio open up gap at summit

The latest round of fixtures in the Spalding and District Table Tennis League saw a split occur at the top of Division One – while the opposite happened in Division Two.

Top flight leaders South Holland maintained their grip with a 5-0 win over Mine’s a Pint.

John Gilbert and Piotr Olstowska took the match in straight ends, with Jean White contributing to the doubles, with just two ends going to the deuce in total.

Moulton SE kept up the pressure with a similar win against Outsiders.

Andrew and Stephen Appleby’s consistency for Moulton meant that they dropped just one end in the five games, leaving them level with Holland but still behind on countback.

Third-placed JDM played Jokers who were fourth.

In a hard-fought match Guntars Briedes took the first end for Jokers in four before Jon Chesworth levelled the scores.

The doubles also went to four, to JDM, before Jon won game four.

In this he went two up before being pulled back but won in the fifth.

Then Tom Chesworth finished the match with a win in three, though one of them was a deuce, putting them a point behind the leaders but seven ahead of their rivals.

In Division Two a clash between the top two saw Rusty Nails 100 per cent record go to chasers TNC.

TNC’s Matt Cole took the first, but the Nails’ Richard Matthews levelled. TNC took the doubles to lead but again Matthews pulled them back before Adrian Louis won the fifth and the match, reducing Nails’ lead at the top to just three.

Below, them Hurricane Brothers hit their stride at last with a 5-0 demolition of Deeping Lads.

However, that belies the fact that three games went to the fourth and the doubles was won on a fifth end deuce.

Hurricane move off the bottom and jump two places as a result.
