Sutton beat the weather

Only one local team managed to beat the weekend’s wet weather on the opening day of the cricket season, with Long Sutton winning by 14 runs at Sleaford Seconds in the South Lincs and Border Premier League Championship.

Openers Nathan Oliver (25) and Josh Baker (19 – including two 6s) put on 32 before Angus Bell (16) and Tim Norris (17) helped things along to 89-2.
However, the rest of the order were unable to match their efforts and the home attack of Ben Lambert (5-15) and Max Lorimer (2-9) saw their innings close on 118 in the 41st over.
Rhys Collings (18) hit four 4s as Sleaford made a swift response, putting on 40 for the first wicket. That was as good as it got for the hosts though, with only Ben Glendinning (19) managing to reach double figures as they were skittled for 104 inside 37 overs.
Their chief tormentors were Charlie Crisp (4-22), Paul Edgeller (3-15) and Reagan Brown (2-19), while a frugal Jake Burton bowled four maidens in his eight-over 0-12.
* Spalding Town president Chris Dring was in the MCC South side, which took on their North counterparts at Lord’s on Friday.
He helped his side to a four-wicket win at the Home of Cricket. The North were all out for 145, with Dring’s team replying with 149/6. He was due to be next in to bat but was not needed.
Dring is a regular part of the Marylebone CC touring side.
* Summer junior training starts for Spalding Town CC on Friday at Hall Lane, Moulton Seas End.
The u9s will be in action from 6-7pm, with the u11s 6-7.30pm.
It is the turn of the u13s, 7-8pm, and u15s 7.30-8.30pm.
Coaching sessions include batting, bowling, fielding and games, with fun promised. New players are welcome.
For adults, the clubhouse bar will be open.
