Survival hopes rest on Bank Holiday double

An incredibly tight relegation battle at the foot of Division One of the United Counties League could be settled this weekend.

A 1-1 draw at Radford saw Pinchbeck United inch out of the drop zone and ended a run of nine consecutive defeats but, with a single point separating four teams trying to avoid becoming the two to join Rainworth in relegation, it remains all to play for in the final four games of the campaign.

The Knights are at Rainworth, who have not won for 32 games, on Saturday and then play host to fellow relegation battlers, and landlords, Sleaford Town at Eslaford Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

The reverse fixture on December 27 was the last time the Knights celebrated a win, 15 games ago.

Six points are essential for Lewis Thorogood’s team, who face a tough final two away matches at promotion hopefuls Coalville and tenth-placed Dronfield.

Saturday saw them fall behind to a 15th-minute penalty. Elliot Foster and Joe Melson came close to levelling before Luke Cullen squared for Foster to equalise in the last ten minutes.

Pinchbeck have added to their attacking options with the arrival of youngster Orin Aldridge on loan from Lincoln City for the rest of the season.

Knights: Martin, Haywood, Balding, Melson, Simpson, Brooks (Callaby), Aldridge, Henderson, Foster, Cullen, Ward (Gadzia). Subs: Shinn, Akajiaku, Stevens.
Attendance: 60.
