Sue’s name is first in hat for Spalding GC ladies’ Gold Medal

Sue Matthews came out on top as overall winner of Spalding Golf Club ladies’ first medal event of 2016.

Thirty three players battled the elements on an extremely windy, cold and sometimes wet day at Surfleet.
Matthews’ nett 78 made her the first person to qualify for the Gold Medal.
Beryl Clay won the bronze division with a nett 80, and Paula Brown won the silver division with a nett 82.

A home match against Canwick Park resulted in a draw, with both sides winning two games.
Winning pairs for Spalding were Debra Ward and Lynda Double won 4&3, and Theresa Starbuck and Chris Leggett won 2&1.
Losing pairs Paula Brown and Hannah Thorold, and Jackie Bailey-Scott and Jean Wilkinson.

The Ladies v men’s 3rd team match was played in glorious sunshine, with 15 pairs on each side taking part.
An extremely close match saw many of the games finishing on the 18th green.
The match result was 8-7 in favour of the men, followed by an excellent meal prepared by steward Robert Richer.
All ladies were presented with a posy of flowers by men’s 3rd team captain Andy Rafferty.

The re-arranged Lady Captains v Lady Presidents match was contested between 32 ladies in the 13 hole greensomes format.
Lady Captain Paula Brown and Lady President Elizabeth Holbrook welcomed the players and thanked everyone for the match which was a halved result.

Spalding GC seniors’ section: April Stableford: Division One – 1st (overall winner) Willie Ford 39pts; 2nd John Camm 38pts; 3rd Jim Dobson 34pts (on countback from 4th Geoff Skinner 34pts).
Division Two – 1st John Dorward 36pts; 2nd John Beba 36pts; 3rd Keith Brown 36pts; 4th Trevor Wright 36pts (all on countback).

The match away to King’s Lynn ended in the first defeat this year by 5-3. Winning pairs for Spalding were: Wayne Wallace/Andy Reedman 5&3, Ron Sudbury/Alan Lambert 4&2.
Halves went to Shaun Gibson/Neil Knighton and Jim Dobson/Brian Reynolds. Losing pairs were John Camm/Howard Greaves 3&2, Mike Gould/Tony Holbrook 7&6, John Beba/Peter Bridge 5&4 and Bill Creasey/John Newcombe 6&4.
