Submitted dashcam footage could lead to prosecutions

Police could prosecute almost half of the drivers reported via a new dashcam footage scheme.

In the first six weeks of the initiative, 11 clips have been sent to police by members of the public and action has been started with five of them.

Offences captured by dashcam included driving without due care, running a red light and a vehicle failing to comply with solid white lines.

The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership is managing the scheme on behalf of the police under Operation Snap.

“We are committed to helping reduce death and injury on Lincolnshire’s roads and believe this initiative will help improve road safety by identifying poor driving.

“Where eligible, we will offer drivers the opportunity to attend an educational course as an alternative to prosecution with the aim of improving driving standards,” said senior manager Steve Batchelor.

The first few weeks of the campaign have proved the effectiveness of the technology being used.

“Having done that, we will now be looking to increase awareness of Operation Snap and increase submissions from concerned members of the public,” added Mr Batchelor.

In 2019 there were 535 people killed or seriously injured on the county’s roads. Last year saw 52 fatailities.

At the launch of Operation Snap in February, Chief Supt Nikki Mayo said the system would ‘assist greatly in dealing with poor driver behaviour.’
Footage can be submitted via the police website’s ‘report a driving offence’ page.
