Striking town workforce

Staff at Bakkavor’s Spalding site have been on strike for the past week amid a dispute over pay.

Over 700 staff walked out initially last Friday after voting in favour of industrial action.
Sam Hennessey, Unite union member, says members are looking for an eight per cent pay rise.
It follows a rejection of Bakkavor’s latest offer of 7.8 a per cent rise for those on the lowest pay grade, a 6.4 per cent one on the upper four grades and a one off £50 payment.
“This has upset a lot of people,” Mr Hennessey said: “We’re not that far apart but it’s about paying everyone what they deserve.
“The company have hired extra security from their own employees, which shows how much trust in their staff they have.
“However everyone has been behaved and there has been a very positive atmosphere.
“We’ve had a lot of support from the public judging by the number of people who have driven past honking their horns or stopped to speak to us.”
Bakkovar has been contacted for comment but did not respond.
