Stanway’s super five-wicket haul steers Long Sutton into SLBL Cup final

A brilliant bowling spell from Barry Stanway helped propel Long Sutton into the final of the SLBL Cup.

Pace ace Stanway took fine figures of 5-9 to help dismiss hosts Claypole for a meagre 76 in 31.1 overs on Saturday.

Sutton then knocked off the runs in just 16 overs, losing only one wicket in the process.

With Sutton skipper Phil Barnes opting to bowl first, he would have been delighted to see his side rip through the Claypole top order.

Stanway got rid of openers Joe Attewell (2) and Graham Revill (3), as well as number three Dan Sullivan (10) and James King (0). Alexander Ireland (35) did offer some resistance for the hosts, but wickets fell all around him.

Dan Oldfield (1-10), Steven Milnes (1-15), Matt Bull (1-21) and Raj Sangha (1-1) also got in on the act to leave the hosts with very little to defend.

In reply, Sutton looked confident from the off.

Openers Barnes (16) and Chris Booth (39 not out) put on 61 for the first wicket before Chris Cragg (1-2) snared the captain.

However, Oldfield (10 not out) joined Booth in the middle and the pair eased Sutton home.

Sutton, who visit Skegness 2nd on Saturday, will also meet them in the final.

  • Long Sutton 2nd slipped to a five-wicket defeat against visitors Freiston 2nd at Paradise Field on Saturday.

Batting first, Sutton were bowled out for a respectable 178.

They lost both openers cheaply, but middle-order contributions from Josh Baker (24), Jeremy Smith (49) and Alex Canham (27) boosted the total.

There was also a vital tenth-wicket stand from Adam Whitaker (16) and Craig Milnes (17 not out).

However, Freiston reached 180-5 in reply despite a fine spell from Canham (3-42).
