Former Spalding High School pupil Lucy Nell won a national title at the Triathlon England Standard Distance National Championships on Saturday.
Nell secured the overall female trophy in the 25-29 years category at the event dubbed the ‘Dambuster Triathlon’ at Rutland Water, which also served as the RAF Triathlon Championships.
Organised by Pacesetter Events, competitors took on a 1.5k swim, 42k bike and 10k run amid roasting hot conditions.
Nell’s winning time of 2.13.15hrs not only clinched national glory, but also saw her beat the times of her male colleagues to become the 2014 RAF Triathlon Champion – much to the surprise of the former University of Leeds student.
“After a very busy week at work it was fantastic to win,” said the 25-year-old. “I had not really looked at the race prior to the start, but just went out hard and got the win, which I am very happy about!”
Now an RAF junior doctor at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, Nell has also qualified for the ITU Standard Distance Triathlon World Championships at Edmonton, Alberta in Canada later this year.
