Spalding Town skipper Ambrose targeting Market Rasen success

There’s no reason why Spalding Town can’t pick up maximum points from their Lincs ECB Premier League clash at Market Rasen on Saturday (noon).

That’s the view of Town skipper Rob Ambrose, who is targeting the trip to Rasen as one his rock-bottom side can look to win.

Ambrose revealed last week that bonus points, not wins, were Spalding’s chief focus as they bid to get out of the relegation zone.

But he has earmarked a number of “winnable” fixtures between now and the end of the season – and it seems mid-table Rasen fit the bill.

The skipper isn’t getting too carried away, however. Rasen beat Town by six wickets in the reverse fixture and have managed five wins from 13 games so far.

“Rasen have done very well this year,” admitted Ambrose. “All credit to them, they are a very decent side capable of surprising many.

“But this is one of those games we can target.

“They may have won five games, but I think that we can be more than a match for them if we go there with a strong side.

“I’d certainly back us to beat them if we’re at our best – but I said that the last time we played them and they proved me wrong.

“Points remain our main aim, but we’ll certainly be going there looking for a win, you can be sure of that.”

Town, buoyed by Saturday’s strong showing against league leaders Bracebridge Heath (see page 38), must again do without key duo Henry Charlton and Josh Newton because of injury.

They will be hoping that Warren Nel continues his fine form against Rasen. The opener made an impressive 103 in the reverse fixture.

Charlie Kearns, who took 4-45 in that game, should also be available.

One to watch for Rasen is Matthew Rutherford, who has taken 47 wickets so far in the league this season. Nobody has more.
