Spalding Ladies thrash Grantham

Spalding’s Ladies XI took two wins from their double header Twenty 20 clash with Grantham on Sunday as part of the Lincolnshire Women’s Cricket League.

Both wins were convincing affairs for Spalding who continue to impress with both bat and ball.

The first game provided the most convincing win with Spalding’s Connie Giltins (36 not out) and Emmy Gittins (29 not out) taking just 52 balls in the reply to knock off the 80 they needed to win by 10 wickets.

A strong all round fielding and bowling display set the victory up as Grantham slipped to 37-5.

A better than a run-a-ball 36 not out from Joanne Carstairs rescued some respectability for Grantham but they closed their 20 overs on 79-4.

Every bowler managed a wicket and from four each Nicki Curran claimed 2-6, Emmy Gittins 2-9, Macey Andrews 1-11, Hayley Jones 1-13 and Sophie Smith 1-33.

In the second match Spalding batted first and posted a total of 136-3 from their 20 overs.

They were largely indebted to a fine 67 not out from skipper Hayley Jones while fine contributions from Macey

Andrews (21) and Karen Smith (14).
That total still proved to be too much for Grantham, despite a fine 50 not out from 56 balls from their opener Emily Lambe.

Fellow opener Lily Fitch (14) provided a platform but when she was bowled by Hayley Jones (1-16), others’ attempts to up the scoring rate led to a flurry of wickets.

Andrews (2-18) was in fine form with the ball and Sophie Smith also finished with 1-19, her wicket coming from a Nicki Curran catch who capped a good showing in the field with a run out.

Grantham closed their 20 overs on 88-6.

The two results have left Spalding second in the early division table behind Market Rasen who have played a game more.
