Spalding IBC’s ladies stay at the top after securing two impressive wins in a week

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s ladies Trudy Bates county league team bagged two emphatic wins in the space of a week to stay top.

First, they travelled to Stamford – where they never once went behind.

Despite dropping eight shots across the board on the last end, Spalding won on four out of the five rinks and by 24 shots (111-87), resulting in a 14-2 win on points.

The top winning rink was skipped by Barbara Hurst, with Michelle Billingsley, Gill Haydon and Maggie Wheatley.

Next up was an away game at Boston, last year’s division winners.

Again, Spalding started strongly and were 19 shots ahead at the half way stage.

Boston fought back strongly to be five shots ahead going into the last end across the board.

Spalding were in front on two rinks, behind on two and level on the other.

They were four shots adrift with one rink left, but in an exciting conclusion to a closely fought contest, the rink skipped by Gill Needham, with Freda Lyon, Maxine Coleman and Maisie Belding, managed to bag five shots, giving Spalding that important one shot aggregate win (96-95).

With three rink wins, a draw and a loss, Spalding secured a 13-3 points win.

The top winning rink was skipped by Julie Hicks, with Jean Patterson, Carole Nunney and June Taylor.

  • Spalding’s over-60s enjoyed a 40-29 win over Stamford in the national Mason competition.

With one rink at home and one rink away, the home rink of Ann Newbury, Jean Patterson, Barbara Hurst and Gill Needham won 29-9.

The away rink of Freda Lyon, Judy Jackson, Maisie Belding and Betty Deaton lost 20-11, but that gave Spalding overall glory by 11 shots.
