Seven-up Tigers bounce back, Tulips pay the penalty

Holbeach United cruised to a 7-0 win at Harrowby United in the UCL Premier Division on Tuesday night, while Spalding United went out of the Doodson Sport Cup 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Ilkeston.

Starting with the Tigers, goals from Craig Parker (15 & 35), Jake Duffy (29), Lee Dube (38) Stacy Cartwright (65), Matt Nolan (67) and Gary King (90) ensured that Graham Drury and John Chand’s side bounced back from their weekend FA Vase loss in emphatic style.

The whopping win moves Holbeach to within eight points of leaders AFC Rushden and Diamonds, with three games in hand.

Before the game the Tigers released defender Kern Miller, making him the second player to leave the club this week. Midfielder Ollie Pinner rejoined former club Boston Town on Monday.

Joing chief Drury said: “I thought it was a dominant performance and we were pretty comfortable all night.

“We wanted to get back to winning games and defending well – and that’s what we did tonight.”

Meanwhile, strikers from Michael Leary and Mitch Griffiths twice put the Tulips ahead in their quarter-final tie in Derbyshire.

However, a penalty from James Reid in first-half stoppage time and a second equaliser from Jake Wright forced penalties.

Jamie Thurlbourne missed Spalding’s first spot-kick – and it proved key, with the next nine efforts all finding the back of the net.

That sent Evo-Stik League Premier Division outfit Ilkeston into the last four, leaving Tulips chief Pat Rayment to rue his luck.

He said: “I don’t know what I’ve got to do to win a penalty shoot-out here! That’s four I’ve lost now.

“I’m disappointed to be out of the competition, but it feels like we stopped the rot with this performance after two defeats in a row.”
