Saturday football: Tulips soundly beaten, surprise loss for Tigers and ten-man Pinchbeck punished

It was a day of defeats for South Holland’s top trio on Saturday as Spalding United crashed 3-0 at Pontefract Collieries, Holbeach United slipped up 2-1 at Wellingborough Town and ten-man Pinchbeck United were beaten 3-0 at home by Rugby Town.

Starting with the Tulips, goals from Pontefract’s Michael Dunn (10), Eli Hey (pen 49) and Nicholas Guest (73) sentenced Matt Easton’s side to a second 3-0 defeat on the spin.

The defeat leaves Spalding 17th in the 20-team Evo-Stik NPL Division One East table, two points above basement side Wisbech Town having played two games more.

In the Future Lions UCL Premier Division, Holbeach’s 12-game unbeaten run was ended by a surprise 2-1 loss at Wellingborough Town.

The hosts took an early lead when Shaun Wilkes headed home from a corner, but James Tricks levelled for the Tigers when he turned home a rebound after Will Bird hit the post.

That’s how it stayed until the closing stages, when Jeremiah Adams beat the offside trap and fired home the winner.

The loss sees Seb Hayes’ side fall to fifth in the table – and they are now 17 points behind leaders Daventry Town.

Also beaten – for the third time in a week – were Pinchbeck United, as fellow high-fliers Rugby Town picked up a 3-0 victory at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

Liam Francis headed Rugby ahead from a corner, before Jack Smith was sent off for two bookable offences.

Lewis Rankin then doubled the lead just before the break, before Fazel Koriya broke clear to round off the victory in the second half.

Back-to-back league losses have seen the Knights fall to fourth in the table, now 14 points off the top with two games in hand.

Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox suffered a shock 5-0 ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division humbling at Stamford Lions.

It’s now two defeats on the trot for Harrox, who have seen their lead at the top cut to four points.

It was a better day for Holbeach United Reserves as they routed Ketton 6-0, while Long Sutton Athletic drew 3-3 at Whittlesey Athletic.

However, Tydd slipped up 1-0 at home against Oakham United and Sutton Bridge United were walloped 5-1 by visitors ICA Sports.
